Review by Hailey SousaStaff Reporter

It’s that time of the year again! Welcome to the second annual albums of the year. Last year we went over the most popular albums of 2021. This year, it’s 2022’s turn. As always these are just the most popular albums of the year, in order of when they were released, and these are just my opinions.

Dawn FM By The Weeknd - January 7, 2022

Dawn FM was a very futuristic production, from the idea of Dawn FM is a radio station to the futuristic sound effects and so on in the songs. This album was definitely good, most certainly not my favorite but if this genre is your music taste I think you would enjoy it. I love The Weeknd but this album just didn’t hit me as much as other of his albums have. There are some features so if some of this music isn’t for you, the features might be.

Who Cares By Rex Orange County - March 11, 2022

Who Cares is a very upbeat pop album, although Rex Orange County has had some allegations against him, I like to separate the art from the artist. I enjoyed this album, it did bring a smile to my face and it has some inspirational songs and a few I relate to. Personally, I don’t think this meets the expectations of his other albums or songs but it is still a good happy pop album.

I NEVER LIKED YOU By Future - April 29, 2022

This album is a rap album, some songs are on TikTok, per usual for new albums. It is definitely a rap album but that's expected from Future. I don’t have much to say about this album, if you love rap music this album is definitely for you. The album is pretty good, I couldn’t get behind some songs but this album does have a lot of features and I honestly do enjoy it.

Mr. Morale And The Big Steppers By Kendrick Lamar - May 13, 2022

Kendrick Lamar always has amazing albums, all of them tell a story and this album is no different. This album is just a masterpiece. This is one of my favorite albums from this year. This album is a rap album but this album is amazing. I cannot say enough good things about Kendrick Lamar or this album. There are also lots of features in this album, although if you don’t like Kendrick’s music style, I don’t think you would enjoy this album.

Harry's House By Harry Styles - May 20, 2022

Harry’s House was Harry Styles third album, this album had over performed in my opinion. One song that everyone was talking about was “As It Was,” this song got popular off of TikTok and continued to be played on radio stations and so on. The songs on this album vary between different things, some songs are breakup songs, some are love songs and some are just fun energetic songs. The genre is considered pop. Even just looking over the album, not reading into the lyrics and just the songs on their own, this is a very summery album. Overall an amazing album and I believe everyone should listen to this at some point in their life.

Superache By Conan Gray - June 24, 2022

Superache is one of the saddest relatable albums I have ever listened to. This is basically a breakup album with two or three upbeat happy songs. This album ruined me, it just hits so hard it is hard to describe. Conan Gray is such an amazing artist and songwriter, I would say this album is considered pop because his other album was also considered pop. Conan Gray has such powerful songs it’s amazing he isn’t more popular.

Wasteland By Brent Faiyaz - July 8, 2022

Wasteland was a very anticipated album, a lot of Brent Faiyaz’s songs had been leaked so lots of songs were already out before this album. When this album was released, I immediately noticed some of the songs that were leaked were not on this album, specifically my favorite leak. Lots of these songs are on TikTok, so some are very popular. This album is mainly rap but with that Brent flare. Overall I really enjoy this album, definitely one of my favorite drops of the year.

Gemini Rights By Steve Lacy - July 15, 2022

Gemini Rights was Steve Lacy’s third album and by far his most popular so far with only 10 songs. This album was all over TikTok, in my opinion, songs being on TikTok makes them less relevant, nothing against this album at all, I love this album. It just makes all of the music considered mainstream, and it gets played over and over again. This album is considered pop music, there were barely any features but overall this is a good album, just played a little too much.

Emails I Can't Send By Sabrina Carpenter - July 15, 2022

This album is a breakup album, there are angry and sad breakup songs on this album. It is also a pop album, this is great if you just got out of a relationship. This album is so upbeat, it’s a great album to listen to every day. Pop music isn’t normally my favorite but this album changes my mind about pop music, something about it is just so nice to listen to.

RENAISSANCE By Beyonce - July 29, 2022

Beyonce is considered the queen of pop music, and she makes it known that she is “that girl” in just the first song. My opinion on Beyonce is a bit different, as I have mentioned before, pop music is just not always my cup of tea. I can say her voice is gorgeous, I do listen to a bit of her music but unfortunately some of this album I just cannot get behind. There are good songs, but not everyone is going to like every song and every album. I just think it could be so much better than what she had put out.

Being Funny In A Foreign Language By The 1975 - October 14, 2022

This album could be used in a movie, I do listen to The 1975 a decent amount and all of their songs follow around the same guidelines. This is considered pop music but I don’t see it as pop, I see it on the far far end of pop, very far away from the music on the radio. This album is so similar to their other projects but I still see development in this album compared to their first album.

Midnights (3 AM Edition) By Taylor Swift - October 21, 2022

Midnights was one of the most talked about albums this past year. Taylor Swift has such a large platform of fans, for example, when her tour was announced, TicketMaster crashed because of how many people were trying to get tickets. Midnights was originally released at Midnight on October 21, 2022, then at 3 AM the same night, Midnights (3 AM Edition) was released. This entire album has something for everyone. This album had 20 songs, plus another song that was only on the cd only carried in Target. All together this album is a masterpiece, it has breakup songs, love songs, and so much more to offer. This album is considered pop music but I feel as if it is so much more than that. If you were to get into the lyrics, you would see many hidden messages hinting at other things to be revisited on another day. This is definitely an album I recommend.

The Car By The Arctic Monkeys - October 21, 2022

Personally, I really enjoy the Arctic Monkeys, unfortunately this album did not meet the expectations. All of their other songs are so good, so this album was such a let down. On top of that, not many people knew this album dropped because it was dropped the same day Taylor Swift dropped Midnights. On second listen, I thought I could enjoy more songs than just one or two but unfortunately, I just could not get behind this album.

Her Loss By Drake and 21 Savage - November 4, 2o22

Personally, I really enjoy and like 21 Savage’s music, Drakes on the other hand, is not my favorite, I do listen to music from Drake just not as much to consider me a fan. Now into the album, immediately the first song was all over TikTok which is immediately not a good sign. The music was very mixed from Drake and 21, which is expected because of the combined album. If I’m being honest this is another miss, with more listens, it might grow on me but for now, I really cannot get behind this album.

Heroes & Villains By Metro Boomin - December 2, 2022

This album has many features, every single song on this album has at least one feature. Lots of songs from this album have been on TikTok. As expected this is a rap album, and honestly, a very good one. All of the songs in order melt together so well, some songs even have combined intros and outros, overall, this is an impressive album.

SOS By SZA - December 9, 2022

SOS by SZA was a very big deal. Her last album “Ctrl” was another big jump in the music business, everyone had anticipated her next album drop. The albums were dropped 5 years apart, which is what makes this such a big deal. SOS has a bit of rap, pop and R&B mixed in. The album also has some very very good songs, some songs like “Kill Bill” had been on TikTok for quite some time. All together this album has 10/10 songs and I feel like more people need to listen to it and appreciate her amazing music ability.

I hope you enjoyed the second annual Albums Of The Year, let’s see what this year brings!
