ORANGE - The weight room at Mahar is being prepared for upgrades, shiny new equipment that will replace the aged platforms and benches. What is in store for the growing weight room program? Does the weight room have an impact of Mahar’s athletic programs? I talked to two of Mahar’s coaches to see multiple opinions on the topic.

Mahar’s Varsity Boys Soccer Coach Dan Guertin was happy to answer some questions. When asked if his team used the weight room Guertin answered, “During the season. No. Out of the season they need to use it more. I think it has the potential to be a good thing, we need to do more than help a kid grow academically.”

I also interviewed Mahar’s Varsity Girls Volleyball and Track and Field Coach, Sarah Woodward. I asked her why the new weight room equipment was important she answered with, “The equipment we have, some of it is over ten years old some of it’s pushing 20 to 30 years, so safety was a big factor. There’s a lot of broken equipment...and we also don’t have some things we need.” I followed with my next question, how do you think the new equipment will benefit the athletic program? Woodward answered, “It is just going to allow us to be more effective...we can add in different thing to help injury prevention. It gives us an opportunity to keep building the program.”

The new equipment is supposed to be here soon, so check it out and maybe take advantage of the growing weight room program here at Mahar.
