Meet Ms. MacKinnon

ORANGE - New to Mahar, Keri MacKinnon! Ms. MacKinnon, the middle school special education teacher, co-teaches eighth grade math and science. A typical day at work for Ms. MacKinnon is very busy and consists of keeping tabs on student’s organization, being in contact with the parents of the students, and charging chromebooks.

When asked what made her want to work at Mahar, Ms. MacKinnon responded with, “The small school environment. Small schools have a community that’s much more engaging.” According to Ms. MacKinnon, with small schools it is much easier to get the students, parents, as well as a teachers needs met. Ms. MacKinnon went on to describe working at Mahar as great and that everyone has been very patient while she is learning all the ropes. During the interview Ms. MacKinnon was asked why she chose to teach math and science and she replied, “It kind of chose me.” Ms. MacKinnon views teaching math and science as a good challenge. It’s something that’s different and something she would like to conquer.

Everyone has a morning routine to prepare themselves for the day ahead. Ms. MacKinnon’s consists of mediation, smiling, and laughter. She can be described as fair, tough as times, and always has her student’s backs. Someone that has inspired Ms. MacKinnon to become a teacher is Marva Collins. Marva Collins was an African-American woman that established the first preparatory school in the south side of Chicago. During the 1970’s, Collins broke down many barriers for children with various needs. Collins and her husband converted their empty upstairs apartment into a school, which is still thriving to this day.

When asked why she chose to teach middle school, she said, “[The students] are far more engaging, I find .” At the end of the interview this journalist could not help but notice how cheerful Ms. MacKinnon was. She radiated positivity, and laughter filled the room. Upon finishing the interview, the last thing Ms. MacKinnon wanted the school community to know, is that she is enjoying her time here at Mahar, and she is looking forward to a long lasting relationship. We wish Ms. MacKinnon many years of success here at Mahar.
